St. Lucia is one of those destinations where you could easily spend your entire trip lounging at the beach and enjoying your resort. But if there's one thing I would recommend, it's making time to get out and explore the island. Between the incredible beaches, volcanic landscapes, local culture and unique experiences, there is so much more to St. Lucia than its beautiful resorts.
Whether you're visiting for a honeymoon, a relaxing getaway or an adventure-filled vacation, here are six things I would absolutely add to your St. Lucia itinerary.
1. Spend the Day at Sugar Beach
Even if you're not staying at Sugar Beach, I highly recommend making arrangements to visit for the day. Tucked between the Pitons, Sugar Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and is worth seeing in person. The combination of the turquoise water, white sand and dramatic mountain backdrop makes it feel almost unreal.
Spend the day enjoying the beach, exploring the resort and taking advantage of everything the property has to offer. Grab a Jetty Burger from the South Pier for a casual lunch, rent snorkeling gear and explore the water around the Pitons, or simply find a spot on the beach and enjoy the scenery. The resort offers water sports equipment for day visitors, subject to availability and arrangements.
While you're there, make sure to stop by the Cocoa Mill, the property's chocolate shop, for a sweet treat, and grab a coffee at Boopas, the resort's coffee shop. Both are worth a visit!
You could easily spend an entire day here, and I would argue it's one of the best ways to experience the beauty of St. Lucia.
2. Visit the Sulphur Springs (The Drive-Through Volcano)
One of the most unique experiences in St. Lucia is visiting Sulphur Springs, often referred to as the world's only drive-in volcano. Located near Soufrière, this geothermal attraction is approximately 15–25 minutes from many popular resorts along the west coast, depending on where you're staying.
The area is filled with volcanic activity, bubbling mud pools and steaming sulfur springs. It's unlike anything you'll see at home and definitely deserves a spot on your itinerary.
You have a couple of options when visiting. If you're short on time, you can make a quick stop, take a dip in the warm mineral-rich mud baths and continue on with your day. If you have more time, consider booking the full tour to learn about the volcano's history and geothermal activity, with the opportunity to explore more of the surrounding area and visit the local market.
Whether you make a quick stop or spend a few hours exploring, this is one of those experiences that makes St. Lucia so unique.
3. Take a Boat Tour Along the Coast
If you want to see more of St. Lucia beyond your resort, getting out on the water is one of the best ways to do it. Whether you prefer a traditional sailboat, a catamaran or a smaller speedboat, there are plenty of ways to explore the island's coastline.
I would recommend choosing a boat excursion that includes stops at different fishing villages, snorkeling locations and some of the island's most beautiful coastal areas. It's a completely different perspective of St. Lucia, and you'll get to see parts of the island that you might otherwise miss.
Depending on the excursion, you can spend the day swimming in clear blue water, snorkeling around the reefs, visiting local communities and enjoying the scenery along the way. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about the island's culture and history from local guides.
If you're visiting for a honeymoon, this is also a great way to spend a day together. Pack your sunscreen, bring a camera and enjoy being out on the Caribbean Sea!
4. Experience a Friday Night Street Party in Soufrière
For something a little different from the typical resort experience, try to make it to one of the Friday night street parties in Soufrière.
These local gatherings are a fun way to experience the island's culture outside of the hotel. Think Caribbean music, local food, art, dancing and a lively atmosphere filled with locals and visitors alike.
It's a great opportunity to try authentic St. Lucian food, meet people and experience a side of the island that you won't necessarily get from staying at a resort. I always think some of the most memorable travel experiences come from stepping outside of the usual tourist itinerary, and this is a perfect example.
Ask your hotel about the Friday night events during your stay. They can help you confirm where the festivities are happening and offer recommendations for transportation so you can enjoy the evening without worrying about getting back.
5. Visit Project Chocolat and Learn How Chocolate Is Made
If you're a chocolate lover, visiting Project Chocolat should be on your list. St. Lucia has a long history of cacao production, and this is a great opportunity to learn more about one of the island's most recognizable local products.
Located at the Rabot Estate, Project Chocolat offers an opportunity to explore the cacao-growing process and learn how chocolate goes from the tree to the finished product. It's an interesting experience even if you're not particularly interested in chocolate, because it gives you a glimpse into the island's agricultural history and traditions.
After exploring the estate, stay for dinner at Rabot Restaurant and Cacao Bar. The restaurant incorporates cacao into its culinary experience and offers an incredible setting surrounded by tropical greenery, with beautiful views of the Pitons. It's a wonderful way to end the afternoon and turn a chocolate tour into a full evening out.
This is one of those experiences I would recommend making a reservation for ahead of time.
6. Explore the Local Towns and Fishing Villages
While St. Lucia is known for its luxury resorts and beautiful beaches, I would encourage you to spend some time exploring the island's local communities, too.
Soufrière is a great place to start. Located along the southwest coast, this historic town is surrounded by some of the island's most recognizable scenery, including the Pitons. Walk through town, visit local shops, stop for something to eat and take in the everyday atmosphere.
You can also explore some of the smaller fishing villages along the coast. These communities offer a glimpse into local life and are a great way to learn more about St. Lucia beyond its tourism industry.
If you book a boat excursion, ask whether your captain can include a stop at one of the villages along the way. It's a wonderful way to combine sightseeing with a more authentic cultural experience.
A Few Tips for Planning Your St. Lucia Itinerary
Don't try to do everything in one day. St. Lucia's roads are winding, and even relatively short distances can take longer than expected. I would group activities by location and give yourself plenty of time to enjoy each experience.
Ask your resort for recommendations. Your hotel concierge is a great resource for arranging transportation, booking excursions and finding out about local events happening during your stay.
Get out on the water. Some of the island's most beautiful scenery is best experienced from the ocean. Even if you aren't typically someone who books boat excursions, I think this is worth making an exception for.
Leave room for relaxation. It's easy to fill every day with activities, but St. Lucia is also a destination where you should take advantage of the beach, enjoy a long lunch and spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing.
At the end of the day, St. Lucia is a destination that offers a little bit of everything. You can spend your mornings exploring a volcano, your afternoons snorkeling between the Pitons and your evenings enjoying incredible Caribbean food. My biggest recommendation is to experience as much of the island as you can while still leaving yourself enough time to enjoy the beautiful resort you've chosen. It's the combination of both that makes a trip to St. Lucia so special!
