There is something about a trip to Destin, Florida, that makes you want to come back year after year. Between the emerald-green water, sugar-white sand, fresh seafood, and laid-back beach atmosphere, it's one of those destinations that makes slowing down feel pretty easy. Whether you're planning a family vacation, a trip with friends, or a week away with a big group, Destin has a little bit of everything.
One of my favorite things about visiting Destin is that you really don't need to have every minute of your trip planned. Some days are best spent doing absolutely nothing but sitting on the beach, while others are filled with boat days, waterfront dinners, and exploring the surrounding beach towns. It's the kind of place where your biggest decision might be whether you're going to grab a margarita before or after your afternoon in the sun.
If you're planning a trip to Florida's Emerald Coast, I've put together some of my favorite places to eat, where I'd recommend staying, and the activities I wouldn't skip. Consider this your guide to making the most of a Destin vacation.
Where to Eat in Destin, Florida
One thing you won't have to worry about in Destin is finding somewhere good to eat. Between casual beachside restaurants, waterfront seafood spots, and local breakfast favorites, there is plenty to choose from. I always think the restaurants you visit are a big part of what makes a vacation memorable, and Destin has some places I'd make a point to visit every time I'm in town.
If you're a breakfast person, start your morning at The Donut Hole. This is a local favorite, and for good reason. They make fresh donuts with seasonal flavors, so there's usually something new to try depending on when you visit. My biggest recommendation is to get there early. It gets busy, and you'll want to have the best selection. And whatever you do, don't leave without trying the key lime pie. I genuinely think it's some of the best key lime pie you'll ever have. It's worth stopping in just for that.
For lunch or dinner, Pompano Joe's is one of my favorite places to enjoy a meal right on the beach. There's something about being able to walk in after a morning in the sand, order lunch, and still feel like you're right in the middle of your beach day. You absolutely have to try the coconut shrimp. It is to die for, and I would happily go back just for that.
If you're looking for a dinner spot with a marina view, Ajs Seafood & Oyster Bar is another one to add to your list. They have a great selection of seafood, including tuna poke nachos and lobster rolls. One thing I particularly like about this spot is that there's a bar connected to the restaurant called Ajs Club Bimini. It's an easy way to keep the evening going after dinner without having to find somewhere else to go for drinks.
For a dinner that feels a little more elevated, I'd also recommend Beach Walk Cafe. Their menu focuses on New American cuisine, which is a nice change when you've spent several days eating seafood and casual beach food. Dishes like basil pesto Parmesan risotto and peppercorn-crusted ahi tuna make this a good option when you're in the mood for something different.
Not every meal on vacation needs to be a full sit-down experience, though. Sandos Beachside is my go-to recommendation for a good coffee and sandwich combination. In my opinion, it's the best coffee and sandwich combo you'll find in all of Florida. It's perfect for grabbing something in the morning before heading out to the beach. For something equally casual, Beachside Social is a great place to grab a quick beer and burger before heading back out into the sun.
If you're craving something other than seafood, you'll want to try Evil Mae's. Coming from someone who lives in Texas, I tend to have pretty high expectations when it comes to barbecue, but this place is actually really good. It's a nice change of pace after a few days of seafood and beachside restaurants.
And of course, a beach vacation wouldn't be complete without a few casual drinks along the way. The Sand Flea is a fun stop for a piña colada or margarita while you're waiting for your sunscreen to dry and getting everything situated for the beach. For a livelier dinner atmosphere, head to Lulu's. It's a fun place for groups and families, and the quesadillas are a must-try.
Where to Stay in Destin, Florida
When it comes to accommodations, I've always preferred renting a house through VRBO or Airbnb, especially when traveling with a larger group. There is just something about arriving in town, making your first stop at Publix, loading up the house with groceries, and getting settled in for the week. Before you know it, there are a million bottles of sunscreen floating around, everyone is figuring out their beach walk route, and the vacation officially begins.
I love having a full kitchen, extra bedrooms, and a shared living space where everyone can spend time together. It also makes the trip feel a little more relaxed when you can make breakfast at home, pack lunches for the beach, or have a night in after a full day in the sun. If you're traveling with extended family or a big group of friends, I'd definitely look into renting a house before booking individual hotel rooms.
That said, if you'd rather have a hotel or condo-style stay, there are several properties I'd consider. Emerald Grande is a great option if you want to be right in the middle of everything. Located along the water near the boardwalk and marina, you're close to restaurants, shopping, and plenty of activities. I particularly like this option for families who want convenience and plenty to do nearby.
If you'd prefer something central but slightly removed from some of the busyness, take a look at Holiday Surf & Racquet Club. Its beachfront location gives you that classic Destin vacation experience while still keeping you close to the main attractions. For a more traditional beachfront condo building, SunDestin Beach Resort is another property worth considering, especially if easy beach access is high on your priority list.
Surfside Resort is a good option if you want easy beach access along with amenities like a gym and outdoor activity areas. And if you're looking for a property with a more tropical feel, Amalfi Coast Resort is worth checking out. Between the two large pools, tropical-inspired surroundings, and convenient location, it's a nice choice for anyone who wants to enjoy both pool days and time at the beach.
Things to Do in Destin, Florida
While I could easily spend an entire vacation doing nothing but sitting on the beach, there are plenty of things to do in Destin if you want to mix up your days. My biggest recommendation is to give yourself a good balance of beach time and getting out to explore. There are some experiences here that are worth making room for, especially if it's your first visit.
Of course, the first thing I'd recommend is spending plenty of time at the beach. Destin is known for its emerald-green water and incredibly soft white sand, and it's worth dedicating multiple days to simply enjoying it. Don't feel like you need to schedule every hour of your trip. Some of the best vacation days are the ones where you grab your beach bag, find a good spot in the sand, and stay there for the afternoon.
If you're looking for something a little more adventurous, consider parasailing over the Gulf. Getting up above the water and seeing the coastline from that perspective is such a fun experience. You can research companies and book ahead of time, or look into options around the marina and beach areas once you arrive. Just make sure to check availability and weather conditions before making plans.
For a break from the beach, Destin Commons is one of my favorite places to recommend. It's a beautifully maintained outdoor shopping center with a great variety of stores and places to eat. It's an easy way to spend a few hours if you're looking to shop, grab something to eat, or simply get out of the sun for a bit.
If you're traveling with kids or a larger family, there are a couple of other activities worth adding to your list. Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park is right off Highway 98 and is a fun way to spend an afternoon away from the beach. They run deals fairly often, so I'd recommend checking for promotions before purchasing tickets, especially if you're buying for a big group. The Track Family Fun Parks is another option nearby, where you can go-kart, ride attractions, and play mini golf. Both are easy additions to your itinerary if you want something different to do for a few hours.
Now, if there is one excursion I would absolutely make room for during your trip, it's Crab Island. This is my number-one recommendation and one of the experiences I think everyone should try at least once. Crab Island is a popular shallow-water sandbar where boats gather throughout the day. You can rent a pontoon boat, head out with your group, anchor in the water, and spend the afternoon swimming and enjoying the atmosphere.
One of the best parts is that vendors often cruise around selling things like ice cream and Chick-fil-A sandwiches. It's such a fun experience, and you can easily make an entire day out of it. I'd recommend booking your pontoon rental ahead of time, particularly during the busy summer season. If you only take one boat excursion while you're in Destin, make this the one.
If you have a little extra time, I'd also recommend exploring some of the surrounding beach towns. Seaside, Grayton Beach, and Panama City Beach are all great options for a day trip. Seaside is particularly charming, with its picturesque architecture, local shops, and walkable town center. It's a fun place to spend an afternoon exploring and grabbing something to eat. Grayton Beach offers a more laid-back coastal feel, while Panama City Beach has plenty of additional restaurants and activities to explore.
Another activity worth considering is booking a guided fishing charter. Destin is known for its fishing, and there are plenty of options whether you're looking for an offshore adventure or a shorter trip. I'd recommend researching guides and booking ahead of time, particularly if you're visiting during peak season.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Destin
Destin is one of those destinations where you really don't need an overly complicated itinerary. Between the beautiful beaches, great restaurants, boating excursions, and laid-back atmosphere, there is more than enough to keep you busy.
My biggest advice? Rent a house if you're traveling with a group, make The Donut Hole an early morning stop, dedicate at least one full day to Crab Island, and leave yourself plenty of time to simply enjoy the beach.
Whether you're visiting for a long weekend or spending an entire week on the Emerald Coast, Destin is a destination that makes it easy to settle in, slow down, and enjoy a little time by the water. And if you ask me, that's exactly what a Florida beach vacation should be.
