If you're planning a trip to South Florida, you've probably come across both Palm Beach and West Palm Beach. Although they're separated by only a short bridge ride, the two destinations offer very different experiences. One is known for its upscale coastal lifestyle, beautiful estates, luxury shopping, and iconic hotels. The other has a lively downtown, an incredible restaurant scene, nightlife, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
So, which one should you visit?
My answer: both of course! Palm Beach and West Palm Beach are close enough that you don't necessarily have to choose just one. But depending on what kind of vacation you're planning, one may be a better fit for your home base, while the other might be good for just a day trip.
Whether you're planning a girls' trip, romantic getaway, weekend escape, or a longer Florida vacation, here's everything you need to know about Palm Beach versus West Palm Beach.
Palm Beach vs. West Palm Beach: What's the Difference?
The easiest way to understand the difference is to think of Palm Beach as the more traditional luxury beach destination and West Palm Beach as the livelier downtown destination.
Palm Beach is located on a barrier island along the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for its beautiful beaches, historic architecture, luxury hotels, manicured landscaping, and upscale shopping. Think elegant restaurants, designer boutiques, oceanfront properties, and a slower, more refined atmosphere. This is where properties such as The Colony Hotel and The Breakers Hotel are located, as well as billionaires row.
West Palm Beach sits directly across the Intracoastal Waterway on the mainland. It's much more energetic, with a walkable downtown, restaurants, bars, shopping districts, and plenty of entertainment. It's where I would spend more of my evenings if I wanted to enjoy dinner, drinks, and a night out.
The good news is that you can easily experience both during the same trip. The two destinations are connected by bridges, making it simple to spend the morning in Palm Beach and head to West Palm Beach for dinner. There are 2 main bridges that both get you to central points on either side.
Palm Beach: Luxury, Beaches & Beautiful Shopping
If you're looking for the quintessential upscale Florida experience, Palm Beach is probably what you have in mind.
The island is known for its beautiful properties, perfectly maintained landscaping, palm-lined streets, and stunning coastal views. It has a much quieter feel than West Palm Beach, making it a great choice for couples, luxury travelers, and anyone looking for a relaxing getaway.
What to Do in Palm Beach
Worth Avenue
You can't visit Palm Beach without spending some time on Worth Avenue. This is one of the most recognizable shopping destinations in Florida, lined with designer boutiques, beautiful storefronts, art galleries, and charming courtyards. Think Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes.
Even if shopping isn't on your agenda, it's worth walking around just to take in the architecture and atmosphere. There are plenty of beautiful spots for photos, and it's a great place to stop for lunch or an afternoon coffee. Some great spots include BiCe Ristorante Palm Beach, Cafe Flora, and Buccan.
The Breakers
The Breakers is one of Palm Beach's most iconic landmarks. This historic oceanfront resort is known for its grand architecture, beautiful grounds, and old-Florida luxury. Even if you're not staying there, it's worth knowing about when planning your trip. Check the property's current visitor and dining policies before planning a visit. They have a bar basically inside of a fish tank - a must see while you’re there.
Palm Beach Beaches
One of the biggest differences between Palm Beach and West Palm Beach is beach access. Palm Beach is directly on the Atlantic Ocean, so you'll find public beach access points along the island. There are many easy access points, including one directly down the street from the Colony Hotel.
Spend the morning enjoying the sand and ocean before heading to Worth Avenue for lunch or shopping. It's an easy way to spend a relaxing Florida day.
Flagler Museum
For something a little different, visit the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum. Housed in the former mansion of railroad magnate Henry Flagler, it's a beautiful way to learn about the history of Palm Beach and the area's development as a luxury winter destination.
Where to Stay in Palm Beach
If your priority is a beautiful hotel, resort amenities, and being close to the beach, Palm Beach is where I would start looking. We have a full breakdown of where to stay here.
The Breakers is the iconic luxury choice, while other boutique and upscale properties such as White Elephant and the Colony Hotel offer a more intimate experience. Staying on the island puts you close to the beach, Worth Avenue, and the area's most recognizable attractions.
Keep in mind that Palm Beach accommodations can come with a higher price tag, especially during the busy winter season.
West Palm Beach: Restaurants, Nightlife & Downtown
West Palm Beach has a completely different personality. It's more energetic, more casual, and offers a lot to do once the sun goes down.
If you're someone who likes to have dinner, walk around downtown, grab cocktails, and find somewhere fun to go afterward, I think West Palm Beach is a great choice.
The downtown area is relatively walkable, with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and entertainment concentrated around a few popular districts. Generally I would say this is a much younger crowd than Palm Beach.
What to Do in West Palm Beach
Clematis Street
Clematis Street is one of the main areas to explore when visiting West Palm Beach. It's filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and entertainment, making it an easy place to spend an afternoon or evening.
I would especially recommend checking it out if you're looking for a lively dinner and drinks atmosphere.
The Square
The Square is another great area to explore, with restaurants, shopping, and places to grab a drink. It's a good option if you want somewhere to walk around without having to plan out every stop.
Norton Museum of Art
If you want to mix in something cultural, the Norton Museum of Art is worth a visit. It offers a nice change of pace from the restaurants and shopping and is a great option for an afternoon activity.
West Palm Beach Waterfront
The waterfront is another area worth exploring. You can enjoy the views, take a walk, or look into water activities and boat excursions. It's a nice way to experience the city outside of downtown's restaurant and nightlife scene.
Where to Eat & Go Out in West Palm Beach
This is where West Palm Beach really shines for me. There are several spots I would recommend adding to your itinerary.
Cucina
Cucina is one of my recommendations for both dinner and a night out. It starts as a restaurant, but around 10 PM the atmosphere shifts into more of a nightlife scene. If you're looking for somewhere to have dinner without necessarily ending your night there, this is a great option.
West Palm Cowboy Club
For a fun night out, West Palm Cowboy Club is another spot I'd put on your list. It's a good option if you're looking for something a little different from the typical cocktail bar or restaurant.
Bar Capri
Bar Capri is another restaurant and nightlife option worth considering. It's a good addition to an evening itinerary if you want to enjoy dinner and drinks in a lively setting.

Where Should You Stay: Palm Beach or West Palm Beach?
This really comes down to the type of vacation you're planning.
Choose Palm Beach if:
You're looking for a luxury hotel or resort experience.
Beach access is a priority.
You want beautiful scenery, upscale shopping, and a quieter atmosphere.
You're planning a romantic getaway or special occasion.
You prefer spending your days relaxing rather than having a packed itinerary.
Choose West Palm Beach if:
You want to be close to restaurants, bars, and nightlife.
You enjoy exploring a walkable downtown.
You want more variety in hotel price points.
You're planning a girls' trip or weekend getaway.
You want a lively atmosphere with plenty to do in the evenings.
One thing I would keep in mind is that staying in West Palm Beach doesn't mean giving up the beach. You can easily cross over to Palm Beach Island for an ocean day. Just remember that West Palm Beach itself is on the mainland and does not have an Atlantic Ocean beach within the city limits.
Can You Visit Both in One Trip?
Absolutely, and I would actually recommend it.
One of the best things about visiting this part of Florida is how close everything is. You can spend your morning on the beach in Palm Beach, grab lunch, spend the afternoon shopping along Worth Avenue, and head back across the water to West Palm Beach for dinner and drinks.
If you have a full weekend, I'd plan at least one day around each destination.
Day One: Palm Beach
Start your morning with breakfast and a walk along the beach.
Spend some time shopping and exploring Worth Avenue.
Visit the Flagler Museum or enjoy a leisurely afternoon at your hotel.
Have a nice dinner and enjoy a quieter evening.
Day Two: West Palm Beach
Start your morning with coffee and a walk around downtown.
Explore The Square and Clematis Street.
Enjoy lunch and spend the afternoon along the waterfront.
Get ready for dinner at Cucina, followed by a night out.
This gives you a little bit of everything without feeling like you're constantly rushing from one place to another.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Palm Beach and West Palm Beach?
The winter and early spring months are especially popular, when visitors head to South Florida for warmer weather. December through April generally offers more comfortable temperatures and less summer humidity, although it's also a busier and often more expensive time to visit.
Summer can be a great option if you're looking for fewer crowds and potentially better hotel rates. Just be prepared for higher temperatures, humidity, afternoon rain, and hurricane season.
If you're planning a trip around a particular event or holiday, I would recommend booking accommodations well in advance.
Final Verdict: Which One Should You Visit?
If I had to choose, I would base my decision on what I wanted out of the trip.
For a relaxing luxury vacation centered around beautiful hotels, beaches, and shopping, I'd choose Palm Beach.
For a fun weekend filled with restaurants, cocktails, nightlife, and exploring downtown, I'd choose West Palm Beach.
But honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either. They offer two very different sides of South Florida, and the best part is that you don't have to miss out on one to experience the other.
My recommendation? Stay wherever best fits your budget and travel style, and make time to explore both. You'll get the beautiful coastal atmosphere of Palm Beach and the fun, energetic dining and nightlife scene of West Palm Beach — the perfect combination for a Florida getaway.
