The Ultimate Guide to Kalispell, Whitefish & Columbia Falls, Montana

If Montana is on your travel bucket list, let me introduce you to one of my favorite areas: Kalispell, Whitefish, and Columbia Falls. Located in northwest Montana, this part of the state is everything you imagine when you think of Big Sky Country. Think beautiful mountain views, crystal-clear lakes, charming downtowns, incredible outdoor adventures, and some of the prettiest scenery you'll ever see.

One of the things I love most about this area is that each town offers something a little different. Whitefish has a charming, upscale mountain-town feel, Columbia Falls offers a more laid-back and authentic Montana experience, and Kalispell provides a more suburban atmosphere with convenient access to everything.

Whether you're planning a summer getaway filled with lake days and hiking or a winter vacation centered around skiing and cozy mountain-town experiences, there is so much to explore. Here's everything I'd recommend knowing before planning your trip!

Getting There & Getting Around

Your best option for flying into the area is Glacier Park International Airport (FCA). The airport has recently undergone renovations and expansions, making it a pleasant and convenient place to begin your trip.

One thing to keep in mind is that flights become much more limited during the winter months. If you're planning a ski trip or winter getaway, I'd recommend booking your flights well in advance to give yourself the best selection of travel options.

Once you land, you'll have a few different directions you can go depending on where you're staying. Head north toward Whitefish or Columbia Falls, or south toward Kalispell. All three are great home bases for exploring the area.

My biggest recommendation is to rent a car. This is not an area where I'd suggest relying on rideshares or public transportation for your entire trip. The towns, attractions, restaurants, and outdoor destinations are spread out, and having your own transportation makes everything so much easier. You'll want the flexibility to explore without worrying about how you're getting back.

Where to Stay

One of the first decisions you'll want to make is which town to call home during your visit. While all three are relatively close to one another, each offers a different experience.

Whitefish

If you're looking for a charming mountain town with boutique shopping, great restaurants, lake access, and skiing, Whitefish would be my first choice.

If you want an upscale, lake-living experience, I'd look at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. The property sits right on the water and offers beautiful views of Whitefish Lake. It's also conveniently located near downtown, making it easy to enjoy the shopping, restaurants, and everything the town has to offer. This is a great option if you want a little luxury while still feeling immersed in the Montana outdoors.

Another option I'd recommend is Larch House. This boutique property is closer to the heart of downtown and is a great choice if you plan on spending a lot of your time exploring local restaurants and shopping. It's a little farther from the lake and ski resort than some other options, but not by much. I'd choose this property if being close to the action is more important to you than having a lakefront experience.

Columbia Falls

Columbia Falls is a great option if you want a more laid-back stay with authentic Montana character. It's also a convenient location for exploring Glacier National Park.

For accommodations, I'd look at Cedar Creek Lodge. It has that authentic Montana feel and is located right off the main road running through town, so you're close to the shops, restaurants, and stops you'll need during your visit. Another fun perk is that it's right across the street from the area that turns into the local farmers market during the warmer months. I love a hotel that puts you right in the middle of the local community!

For something with a little more personality, check out Glacier Inn Motel. Hallmark movie fans, this one is for you! It has that charming, nostalgic inn feel that makes you feel like you've stepped onto a movie set. It's locally owned and centrally located, making it a fun option if you want something different from your typical hotel.

Kalispell

Kalispell has a more suburban feel than Whitefish and Columbia Falls, so you won't find quite as many boutique-style accommodations. However, it's still a convenient place to stay, especially if you want easy access to shopping, restaurants, and the surrounding towns.

If you love a little history and vintage charm, I'd look at The Kalispell Grand Hotel. It's located right in the middle of the city and offers a different experience from the more traditional mountain resorts. It's a great option if you appreciate locally owned properties with character.

Another option to consider is Mt. Cleveland, which is also centrally located and worth looking into if you're hoping to stay in this part of town.

Consider an Airbnb

If you want to feel completely immersed in the Montana outdoors, I'd seriously consider booking an Airbnb or vacation rental. There are so many beautiful properties throughout this area, including cabins tucked into the mountains, homes overlooking the water, and rentals with incredible views and amenities.

For me, this is one of the best ways to experience Montana. If you don't necessarily need to be within walking distance of restaurants and shopping, a private mountain retreat could make your trip that much more special.

Things to Do

This is where the area really shines. Whether you're an avid hiker, a lake-day enthusiast, a small-town explorer, or someone who just loves a beautiful scenic drive, there is no shortage of things to do. If I had to narrow it down, these would be at the top of my list.

Glacier National Park

If you do only one thing during your trip, make it a visit to Glacier National Park. This is my number one recommendation, and honestly, a trip here will change your life. The scenery is unlike anything else, and it's one of those places that makes you stop and appreciate just how beautiful the world can be.

There is something for everyone here, whether you want to spend the day hiking, explore the visitor exhibits, take in the scenery from a scenic drive, or bike along one of the park's roads when conditions allow. You can make your visit as adventurous or as relaxed as you want.

My biggest piece of advice is to plan this portion of your trip first. Certain park experiences and routes are seasonal, and access can depend on weather and road conditions. Some areas also have vehicle reservation requirements during busy periods. Check the official National Park Service website well in advance so you know what will be open during your visit and when reservations become available. Some reservations are released on a rolling basis, including around 30 days in advance.

This is not something I'd leave until the last minute. Popular areas fill up quickly, and a little planning will make a huge difference in your experience.

Polebridge

If you're up for a little adventure, make the drive to Polebridge. Located about 40 minutes north of Whitefish, near the Canadian border, Polebridge is a tiny community with some of the most beautiful surroundings you'll find in the area.

This is one of those places that feels like you've discovered a little hidden corner of Montana. You'll find incredible mountain views, a slower pace of life, and bakery goods that are absolutely worth the drive. The Polebridge Mercantile is especially famous for its baked treats, so come hungry!

You can easily make this a day trip, but there are also lodging options nearby if you'd rather stay a little longer and really soak in the experience.

Get Out on the Water

If you're visiting during the warmer months, you have to spend some time on the water. Montana isn't just about mountains and hiking trails; the lakes and rivers are equally beautiful.

I'd recommend kayaking along the Flathead River or heading out onto Flathead Lake for a day of boating, tubing, and enjoying the sunshine. Renting a boat for a few hours is such a fun way to experience the area, especially if you're traveling with friends or family.

Even if you aren't interested in water sports, spending an afternoon by the lake is a must. It's hard to beat the combination of clear water, mountain backdrops, and beautiful summer weather.

Explore Downtown Whitefish

Even if you aren't staying in Whitefish, I highly recommend making the drive up to explore the town. Downtown Whitefish is full of charming shops, restaurants, and local businesses that make it such a fun place to spend an afternoon.

The town has a quintessential mountain-town feel, and it's especially beautiful during the summer when the flowers are in bloom and the streets are full of visitors enjoying the warmer weather.

I'd also recommend checking out Whitefish Mountain Resort. While it's a popular ski destination in the winter, it's worth visiting during the summer, too. The views are beautiful, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy the mountain outside of ski season.

Take a Day Trip to Canada

If you have some extra time in your itinerary, I'd absolutely consider taking a day trip into Canada to visit Waterton Lakes National Park.

Located approximately 2.5 hours from Columbia Falls, Waterton is a beautiful destination for anyone who loves the outdoors. Think dramatic mountain scenery, gorgeous lakes, wildlife, and charming little town stops. It's a completely different experience from Glacier, but equally beautiful in its own way.

Just remember to bring your passport and check the border crossing requirements before you go. If you have the time, this is a trip I'd definitely add to your itinerary.

Where to Eat & Drink

One of the things I love about this area is that you can find everything from casual local breweries to elevated mountain-chic dining. Each town has its own personality, and I'd recommend trying a few places in different areas rather than limiting yourself to wherever you're staying.

Columbia Falls

One of my favorite recommendations in Columbia Falls is Backslope Brewing. You probably wouldn't expect to find great ramen at a brewery in Montana, but Backslope will prove you wrong! Between the food, friendly people, beautiful surroundings, and great prices, it's an easy place to recommend. Don't overlook the ramen just because you're visiting a brewery!

Another spot worth checking out is Gunsight Saloon. It's a fun, casual local spot with plenty of TVs, pool, and games inside. During the warmer months, you can also catch live music. Whether you're looking for somewhere to watch a game, grab a drink, or spend an evening with friends, this is a great choice.

Kalispell

If you're looking for something a little more elevated, KM Bar is my recommendation. It's a bar and grill with a divey but classic feel that perfectly captures the mountain-chic aesthetic. It's a great option when you want a quality dinner without feeling overly formal.

For something quick and casual, stop by Moose's Saloon for a slice of pizza before heading out for the evening. It's a fun, laid-back spot and a great addition to your Kalispell itinerary.

One additional thing to know about Kalispell: because it's more suburban than Whitefish or Columbia Falls, you'll find many of the familiar chain restaurants you'd expect in a larger city. If you're looking for something familiar or convenient after a long day of exploring, you won't have trouble finding it.

Whitefish

If you're craving Mexican food, Jalisco Cantina is a great option. It has a convenient location, good prices, and good food. Sometimes that's all you need! It's an easy choice when you're exploring downtown Whitefish and want somewhere casual to grab a meal.

Want a spot that feels a little more local? Check out Bulldog Saloon. It's a casual bar where you'll find plenty of locals, a laid-back atmosphere, and a pretty good burger. This is a fun place to stop when you want to experience a different side of Whitefish beyond the boutique shops and upscale dining.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

A few things I'd keep in mind when planning your trip to this part of Montana:

Plan ahead, especially during peak season. Glacier National Park is incredibly popular, and certain attractions, routes, and accommodations book up quickly. If there are specific experiences you don't want to miss, research reservation requirements and book as early as possible.

Rent a car. I can't stress this enough! Whitefish, Columbia Falls, and Kalispell are close enough to visit during the same trip, but far enough apart that having your own transportation makes a huge difference. You'll also want a car for Glacier, Polebridge, and your other day trips.

Consider an Airbnb for a more immersive experience. If you want to wake up to mountain views, enjoy a quiet morning on a deck, or stay in a cabin surrounded by nature, look into vacation rentals. Some of the most memorable accommodations in Montana are outside the main downtown areas.

Be mindful of the season. Summer and winter offer two completely different Montana experiences. Summer is perfect for hiking, boating, exploring Glacier, and enjoying the small towns. Winter is all about skiing, snow-covered scenery, and cozy mountain getaways. Just remember that winter flight schedules and seasonal road closures can affect your plans.

Don't limit yourself to one town. Even if you choose Whitefish as your home base, make time to explore Columbia Falls and Kalispell, too. Each has something different to offer, and some of my favorite stops are outside the town where you're staying.

Final Thoughts

If Montana isn't already on your travel bucket list, it should be! The Kalispell, Whitefish, and Columbia Falls area is one of those destinations that really has it all. You can spend your mornings exploring national parks, afternoons on the lake, and evenings enjoying local restaurants and charming mountain towns.

My biggest recommendation is to give yourself enough time to experience the area rather than trying to squeeze everything into one or two days. Between Glacier National Park, the surrounding lakes, the small towns, and the incredible scenery, there's so much more to see than you might initially expect.

Whether you come for a summer lake getaway, a winter ski vacation, or simply to experience the beauty of Montana, I think you'll leave already planning your next trip.

Happy travels!
